I give presentations, workshops, and professional development sessions with school districts and individual teachers around the U.S. on standards-based assessment for secondary ensembles. These worshops engage teachers in developing community-centered standards for testing students in the ensemble classrom. Effective, community-specific assessments provide individual students with a pathway toward self-improvement and self-inquiry, serve as a diagnostic tool for refining a teacher’s own instructional practice and curriculum, and provide strategies for how using accumulated data to communicate program-wide excellence, achievement, and progress in place of competitive events. This type of work is especially important for schools with limited resources and diverse populations/expectations for arts education.
This standards-based methodlogy was implemented, tracked, and refine over a three-year period during my time as a high school vocal music teacher in a rural, low-income school district. It has since been adopted by a diverse array of educators, schools, and secondary fine arts departments around the country.
